N O A H D A N I E L S

In a rundown part of the city like this, there were tons of bars and nightclubs of all sorts on pretty much every block, loud music blaring from some, others with bright neon lights advertising itself, while others were silent and with a couple lights to show it exists and it's open. If you lived in this part of town, you had a place you would go to often. Where you “belonged”, so to say, and if you went anywhere else, you'd be treated like an outsider and you'd just feel plain awkward and get out of there pretty damn quickly. So even though Noah didn't want to be a drinking type and didn't want to be considered a drinking type by others, he still had one bar he visited a few days a week, typically tuesdays, wednesdays and fridays. He preferred tuesdays and wednesdays, fridays tended to have more people in than usual, and Noah didn't really like being around a lot of people, but he was able to deal with it and got used to it, so this friday was like any other before as he walked to the bar on the corner of the street, silently hoping the spot he's fond of wasn't taken.

The bar's very average compared to the others around it. The outside wasn't shabby with peeling paint and breaking doors (like most), but wasn't flashy with neon everywhere like the nightclubs, it wasn't bright and cheery looking like one other bar (and the only one in this part of town that Noah knew of, he's surprised it even has business). This bar was just a plain old thing, decent and clean and quiet, noticed and acknowledged by many, but only a few go in. The inside is dimly lit, clear enough to see everything and everyone there but not restaurant-bright either. The seats not at the bar counter, which was against the wall on the far right from the entrance, were mostly booths hugging the opposite and back walls, with a couple tables in the middle of the room.

Noah pushed the door open, avoiding the looks of those curious of who entered, he glanced over at the empty bar stool second to last on the corner of the bar, thankful it and the ones next to it were also empty, he sat down and nodded to the bartender whom he knew and was somewhat friends with him, ordering simply a beer he took a look at the time, noticing it was almost two in the morning, his face changed to a mild expression of shock as he realised it was later than he thought, though it did result in less people in, and Noah thought maybe he'd come by later than earlier from now on. The bartender handed him his beer and he thanked him, the bartender smiled and walked off to talk to someone on the other side of the counter, and Noah gave an internal sigh of relief while examining around the whole bar to see if there were any new faces at this time of night.

He could hear footsteps making their way over to Noah, at a quick pace too, and he felt himself tense up inside at the thought of having to socialise. Noah didn't turn as he felt the person slide onto the bar stool next to him. He didn't say anything first, didn't even look or glance at them, hoping maybe, they wouldn't say anything.

But they did. Or, more accurately, she did. “Hi, I'm Paige.

Noah turned to look at the girl that the voice belonged to. He didn't say or do anything for a moment, just looked her over, but then half heartedly raised his fingers from his glass in a wave type gesture, not even half heartedly though; more like quarter heartedly. Actually, was there even any heart at all in that wave type gesture? Noah gave a quick closed mouth smile to her to accompany the wave. He accepted her extended handshake request and held her hand, allowed his hand to be lifted up and down by her before pulling back, just so he didn't seem rude. She had this vibe on her that made him make sure he didn't act impolite, or else he'd be in shit. Probably imagination, he thought. But why be rude and antisocial when you can be, well, not?

So he spoke to her. “Hey. I'm Noah.” He stated his name simply. You'd think from how he was acting that this had never happened to him before. But then you'd be thinking wrong. It has, in fact. And he knows how it goes, why even bother with introductions? If all goes as expected, I won't care what your name is in about twenty four hours.

He didn't even come here for that kind of thing anyway, if he wanted quick sex he could go anywhere else. This place was a comforter to him. Speaking of which, why was this girl – what was her name? Prissy? Wait no. That's a dumb name. Uh, Pagan? Hold on, that's a religion not a name. But is Pagan really a religion? I thought it was more like a cult. No shut up, what was that girl's name? Maybe... Paige? Oh yeah, that was it. - here anyway. Girls like her never come here. She was far too good looking and the way she sat and her subtle body language, her facial expression, and even the way she spoke all shouted SELF CONFIDENCE!!!. Only average people with average looks and average lives and average confidence come to this extremely average bar.

So, Paige,” Noah silently hoped he got the right name, “What brings you here? I haven't seen you around before.” He asked her. He tried to act normal and more social than he usually is, because hey, this is a once in a lifetime chance here.

A part of Noah wanted to cut the bull, skip the small let's-get-to-know-each-other-to-seem-more-respectable talk and get to it already, but another part of him told him, are you fucking serious, talk to the girl properly, and Noah listened to that part, so he racked his brain trying to think of something to say once the conversation inevitably dies.

A small frown tugged at her plump lips, eyes flickering up to meet the man opposite. Her jaw set slightly as she heard the beating of heavy rain hit the windows, filling the quiet room with a irregular tempo of the obnoxious sound. It was a dull pattering sound, a low background theme that added a stuffy atmosphere to the room, an unwelcome effect the building took on due to the humid weather the city’d had for the past few days. A laugh erupted from her mouth as the man asked her how often she came. “I’ve never been here,” she admitted, taking inconsistent sips from her glass while he spoke. “I’ve just got back from a two year contract in Amsterdam, so I’m not actually that familiar with this area.” Resting her elbows on the bar, the brunette placed her chin in her palm and turned to the man beside her, a coy smile dancing on her lips. Her hand sat lightly on his arm, a subtle, soft grip on him. “You know, Noah…” A giggle tumbled from her lips after she repeated his name, leaning forwards in a drunken pretence. “Noah.” Again, but slower and quieter, as if his name was the only word she had ever learnt to say. Glancing at the man again, her chocolate hues searched his features to pin an emotion, her slender fingers grazing her glass in impatience. In a quieter tone and her honeyed voice just noticeably slurred, she spoke. “We can sit here and talk shit all night, Noah.” She paused as her smaller frame flinched, a small hic! escaping her mouth. She laughed. “But,” The brunette started again, resting a steady hand on the man’s knee and whispering in his ear, “Seems a waste of time, knowing that we both want to go back to my apartment, have sex and never see each other again.” Leaning back into her original seat, she took a few notes out of her pocket, carelessly pushing them onto the counter. Paige quickly slid off the seat, wrapping her jacket around her shoulders and sparing glance at Noah. “‘Cause I’m going right now. You coming or not?” Her eyes were wide and dark with excitement, desire almost quivering off her skin.

Nodding in reply to Paige answering his question and saying she's never been here before, Noah didn't have a response verbal wise, but that did explain why he's never seen her around. The reason 'I've never been here' seemed completely obvious now, and Noah felt a little dumb for asking in the first place, but hey, it sparked some sort of conversation, right?

Wrong, since now you can't think up a suitable reply, idiot. Noah cursed at himself in his head, but thank the good Lord, Paige started talking again.

Noah looked up from his beer, in the glass that he was idly moving from hand to hand on the table, as he felt Paige place her hand on his arm and she spoke. She leaned closer to him and instinctively, he leaned away from her, but stopped himself before it became too noticeable and seemed rude. He kept still as the words poured from her mouth. He was surprised at the forward words. No, surprised didn't quite cover it. Shocked? Taken aback? Amazed? Amazed definitely doesn't sound right. There wasn't a word. He was just... just... Didn't expect that, is all he could say to explain his reaction, if you could call it that. More like lack of reaction, as he realised after Paige had finished speaking he was still there in silence, in shock, not knowing how to answer her.

The pressure on his leg was lifted as she leaned away again. She was paying and standing up, getting ready to leave, and Noah still hadn't said a word. "You coming or not?" She asked him.

Noah stood up, feeling stiff and fairly tense, he placed his own money on the counter, and turned to Paige, meeting her eyes and forcing himself to hold eye contact, "Yeah," was all he could get himself to say. One word. Nice to play it cool. And boring.

Ignoring his unusually nervous thoughts, he walked towards the exit. He wasn't sure why he was so nervous now, it's not like he hasn't done this before. It's not like it's a first time. But this girl had some crazy intimidating aura around her, and it wasn't putting Noah off, because after all, she was attractive, but it was certainly making him cautious.

With a glance at the man's apparently surprised features, she drew her jacket close around her shoulders, working to keep a smug smile from appearing on her lips. The walk to her apartment was quick. Considering she'd chosen to go to the bar closest to her home, it wasn't an uncomfortably long way and she was able to keep a conversation going with the man, despite its mundane topics. She didn't stand too far from him, in case she gave the impression of being standoffish, but she could tell that standing too close would invade his comfort, and though she rather enjoyed making people squirm, the thought didn't cross her mind. The conversation slowed as they approached her home building, the impressive skyscraper lighting up the deep black sky with dull golden glow, few lights on in the block at the time of night. The lobby was unoccupied as expected. The fresh smell of hotel fresheners and expensive detergents filled the spacious hallway, the question of Noah's living space on the tip of the girl's tongue as she directed him towards the lavish elevator, brass buttons adorning the panels in their hundreds. They didn't have to wait long, as it had returned to its neutral position. This was expected, as the building rarely got visitors so early in the morning. Paige gestured to the inside of the enclosed space, her heels tapping quickly on the tiled floor. A sweet smile graced her features as she stole a quick glance at the man next to her. She reached onto her toes slightly to press the elevated button for her floor, the slight 'ding!' breaking the easy silence between them for a moment, before the soft tones of foreign music hummed through the speakers. The brunette's french tipped nails closed slowly onto her purse as they started moving upwards, her painted red mouth opening a fraction and her body turning towards his as she spoke. "You okay with dogs?"

Her hand brushed lightly against Noah's sleeve as the elevator doors started to open, beckoning him forth down the long hallway, the cream carpet soft and bouncy under their feet. As they approached the end of the corridor, a plain, dark, wooden door was all that remained on their left. After a quick search in her bag, the brunette produced a chain of keys, each differing in size, shape and colour. She quickly unlocked the door and slid her keys onto a surface inside the room, heels quickly sliding off and under the table right by the door, leaving her purse on the top. She slowly began unraveling the scarf that clung too closely to her neck, shedding the belt that held her in all day before peeling at her jacket and wandering towards the living room, motioning towards a deep purple chaise through the door.

A beat of soft footsteps could be heard from through the walls, growing louder until it easily reflected those of a human. But, as the sound increased still, until it seemed there was someone walking behind the sofa, only a quiet snuffling noise replaced the steps and Paige turned to welcome the creature that had appeared in the room. An enormous, oversized white fluffy dog that closely resembled a foal sized ball of cotton was excitedly burrowing her head into Paige's hands, the girl bending down to greet her dog. As she stood up, the hound turned towards the man in the room, approaching him in a similar manner. Her tongue lolled and her body shook with excitement. Paige had walked to the end of the spacious room, opening a cabinet and retrieving two bottles, both chilled beer. "So, Noah." She paused, shutting the cabinet door and turning to face him. "Tell me about yourself, what do you do?"
